DEEP DEEP DOWN DETOX
Nina Santes, 2024
Deep Down Detox is the second episode of the Beauty Glow Tanning Studio creative cycle (2023-2026) by Nina Santes.
After Peeling Back, the first episode of the series, the Beauty Glow Tanning Studio opens its doors again to give life to Deep Down Detox. This second episode, conceived as an installation-performance, aims to bring the scenography to life as an alternative beauty care centre open to the public by appointment.
With Deep Deep Down Detox, the show is mixed with reality, the process is the work. DDDD settles for one, two or three weeks in a place. Each residency is an opportunity to open the scenographic installation to propose individual and collective meetings between the inhabitants and the Beauty Glow Tanning Studio hostesses.
Deep Deep Down Detox is not a workshop or a show, but an immersive experience in which the “clients” and the “hostesses” play their own role. They make an appointment, receive a tailor-made treatment, and in return, leave a voice message in the Studio. At the end of each residency, a public performance will be proposed, as a way to make the space resonate and to choreograph the ghostly presences.
Deep Deep Down Detox is a performative protocol in constant mutation, a non-exhaustive list of experimental treatments to detoxify “a little bit” from the logics of domination, predation, exploitation, exerted on bodies, our bodies, their bodies, human and non-human.
Deep Deep Down Detox proposes aesthetic treatments; treatments whose objective would not be to heal or to make beautiful, but perhaps to reclaim the aesthetic experience as a tool for liberation and inclusion. The Studio attempts to “reclaim beauty” as a suspended moment, an experience rooted in the body, sensations, affects, the individual and the collective. As a movement, a state, a liminal, impure process, which aspires to free itself from the normative gaze, the binarities and the systems of violence that these convey. Aesthetic care will make the quest for an unspeakable beauty, which cannot be seen but can be felt.
Through different modes of intervention, DDDD proposes to put into play a collective device of hospitality.
